Mesothelioma is a disease that can kill any patient, but the human’s understanding of the disease to prevent and treat is still very limited. Everyone and especially the patients need to understand clearly about mesothelioma. Because understanding about mesothelioma does not only help you with knowledge but you can also cure this disease.
Firstly, what is mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is a cancer of the inner lining of the chest or abdomen, which is also classified as a silent killer disease. The majority of people have mesothelioma because they have to suffer from asbestosis. Especially, this rare disease has no specific medication. Mesothelioma can start in the lungs or spread to any part of the lung. Like any type of cancer, mesothelioma is the result of abnormal cells developing and dividing without control. They form abnormal cells called tumors. The tumor cells invade nearby tissues and spread to other tissues through the blood and lymph. At last, mesothelioma tumors may create other small tumors on the pleural surface before spreading to other tissues.
Secondly, what are the symptoms of mesothelioma?
Symptoms and signs of mesothelioma include some symptoms such as fatigue, poor appetite, weakness and weight loss, gastrointestinal disturbances, abdominal pain or swelling of the abdomen, swelling of the legs… In fact, the patients often ignore these symptoms which are non – specific. In other cases, mesothelioma does not cause any symptoms and it is only detected when the patient goes to the doctor for other problems. For example, the signs are the gallbladder, hernia or pelvic mass. As it develops heavier, mesothelioma will cause bowel obstruction and ascites. In the long run, the symptoms will show more clearly so the patients can feel these signs: shortness of breath or pain in breathing, pain in the chest or back area of mesothelioma causes difficulty breathing.
And finally, how is mesothelioma diagnosed? Despite the association between mesothelioma and asbestos exposure, it is unclear to know how the asbestos fibers penetrate the pericardium. Doctors only know that asbestos fibers cause chronic inflammation of the heart and consequently lead to pericardial cancer. Diagnosis mesothelioma can be by radiology, CT scan or MRI. But disease identification and prognosis should be based on pericardial biopsy. The prevalence of mesothelioma depends on the type of cancer that invades the peritoneum. After identifying the disease, it is necessary to determine the stage of the disease because the treatment plan depends on the stage of the UTBM. At phase 1, UTBM can be expected to be surgically corrected. But during later stages, UTBM can only be treated with radiation and chemotherapy.
We know that mesothelioma is a dangerous disease that can be a hidden murderer. But when we have the knowledge about that disease, we can help other patients.
